Orientation Day 3

Today’s goal is Art engagement, time, and money! The students once again took pictures throughout the day, saving one for the end of the day to reflect on. Naturally, we started out with our mindfulness practices and morning pages. Managing money and time effectively, to me, is the most important skills for a young person to master. In my experience, I’m still meeting grown adults who need to work on these skills (even I need to talk myself out of buying Chipotle two times in one week…).

The students met with two staff members from PNC Bank to speak on financial planning and how to budget/ pay for college. This was also extremely helpful for managing the money students were going to make during this program.

After lunch, students went on a Station North walking tour guided by their college mentors Ashley and Raina. They visited a bevy of locations in Station North culminating in the visit of “Graffiti Alley” at the Motor House. It’s safe to say the majority of pictures from the day occurred at Graffiti Alley. In addition to a general walking tour, students participated in a scavenger hunt–interns wrote a quick reflection about each spot they visited then took pictures of things they wanted to write more about.

The tour ended with a final reflection where interns selected their picture, wrote a headline, then presented.

Orientation Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of Orientation! Today’s goal is: Getting prepared for the workplace. However, this was also a secret task: the students are to take pictures of key moments during the day. Those pictures could include a time of reflection, an engaging moment with either Chaz or Kristina or a fun moment with new friends. The students will then pick one picture that best represents the day at the end of the day.

We started the day with our usual morning pages and mindfulness practice which led into our icebreaker. In keeping with our goal for the day, we discussed Workplace Protocol–being on time, not being afraid to ask for help, and what to do if you “run out of things to do”. Students then transitioned into their Office Scenarios “Freeze Frame” where students created a tableau illustrating a work related phrase. Nate Tate and his group did “Work Load” which was hilarious!

A fan favorite today was in the afternoon when we played “Fashion Do’s and Don’t’s”. Chaz Walters and Lindsey Boyd acted as the “fashion police” and cited students for work appropriate and non-work appropriate outfits. The students have so much fun with this one. We then ended the day by looking at the pictures student chose to best represent the day and students also attached a “headline” to their photo explaining what it means to them.

Today we also introduced Weekly Blog Posts.

NOTE:

Daily Headlines: Interns are required to collect ideas and images each day as “headlines”. Images can be a photo they take or something they find on the web that relates to their headline. Headlines need to be at least one full sentence. It can be a discovery, a statement about something they learned that day, a review of what they did, or any other thought they have related to their internship. At least 3 headlines need to be submitted each week.

Weekly Blog Post: Interns are required to submit at least one blog post each week. It can be about anything related to the internship program. Blog posts must be at least one paragraph and be proof-read for complete sentences, grammar, and spelling. We encourage interns to submit images to go with each blog post. A total of 6 blog posts must be submitted by the end of the internship.

Orientation Day started with a bang! Imagine 25 nervous but excited teens walking into an OpenWorks classroom having no idea what to expect. They were greeted by Kristina Berdan and Chaz Walters who tried their best to make them feel right at home and prepare them for a rigorous 7-week program.

The goal of Orientation Day 1 was to get to know each other and begin to build the BAI community. We started with our Mindfulness Practice and our Morning Pages (we would continue to do this for the duration of the program).  After a mindfulness morning, a pre-survey, and ground rules and regulations, we really started to have some fun. We practiced Artful Thinking (this is a process “…Where teachers use works of visual art and music in ways that strengthen student thinking and learning in the arts and beyond…” (source: http://www.pz.harvard.edu/projects/artful-thinking).

This was followed up by a draft of their “Where I’m From/ Where I’m Going” project with their choice of expression. They could “answer” these questions in the form of a movie poster, a poem in two voices, or using postcards creatively.

Students ended the day by decorating their writing journals!
